One of the most common questions I get before a session is, “What should we wear for family photos?” And honestly? It’s a great question—because what you wear truly sets the tone for your photos.
As a photographer who loves capturing natural connection and timeless moments, I always recommend outfits that feel like you, while also helping the images feel elevated and cohesive. Here are a few of my go-to styling tips to make sure your photos turn out beautifully:
1. Neutrals Are Always a Yes
Think creams, tans, soft browns, muted greens, warm grays, dusty blues, or even a hint of rust or sage. These tones compliment each other beautifully, photograph well in any season, and never go out of style.
Bonus: neutrals help keep the focus on you—your connection, your expressions, and the moments that matter most.
2. Mix in Texture
Waffle knits, gauze, linen, denim, lace, or even a chunky sweater—texture adds interest without needing bold patterns. It creates depth and movement in your photos, especially when paired with soft lighting and outdoor settings.
3. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in the same white shirt and jeans! Instead, aim for outfits that work together without being identical. Choose a neutral color palette and then layer in complementary tones and pieces for each family member.
4. Keep It Comfortable (Especially for Kids & Expecting Mamas)
Comfort is key for natural, joyful photos—especially during maternity or family sessions. Choose outfits that let you move, sit, snuggle, or walk without fidgeting or needing constant adjusting.
5. Accessories + Layers = Magic
A flowy cardigan, a wide-brim hat, a baby wrap, or even a textured scarf can add dimension to your photos without overpowering them. Layers also allow us to play with variety during your session.
